Defect:  Ceiling mounted smoke detector (location) is aged, as evidenced by yellowed case and missing proper cover and battery.  The missing cover alters airflow to sensor, making it either more or less sensitive than originally designed.  Detector is therefore questionable.  Unable to test as required in present unpowered condition.  Recommend replacement with required type of device and tested as appropriate prior to occupancy.
