Defect: Damper control ratchet has fallen apart, apparently due to corrosion, preventing control of the damper.  Control parts are extremely corroded and some parts show rust-through of the sheet metal.  This makes proper draft control of the fireplace impossible and can result in a deadly build-up of combustion gases such as carbon monoxide inside the home.  Recommend that the complete fireplace, draft system and flue be properly evaluated and repaired by a licensed professional before any use of the fireplace is attempted.
