Single rafter in attic with white substance on all sides.

Not paint - felt "chalky" and did not wipe off by just rubbing. A little saliva and some light rubbing and it did come off.

First thought is it is an old form board, but curious as to why only one, out of all the rafters in the attic.

There were other random framing members painted white also.

Recessed Light fixture and insulation

There was a recessed light above the shower that was not I/C rated. It turned on the same time the vent fan was turned on. I removed the bulb and covered up the hole with some Greenboard drywall. I cannot reach the light fixture in the attic to save my life as it is installed all the way back to where the soffit are on the other side of the wall.

My question is, can I now cover the fixture with some insulation? You can feel the cold air coming down from the opening in the ceiling (with the temp. piece of drywall removed.)

I still have the exhaust fan operational and connected to the light fixture, just removed the bulb like I said.

Many thanks in advance.....

How do you report Asbestos Floor Tile ?

Did a Condo last night built in the fifties and pulled up a piece of the carpet to see what is most likely Asbestos tile under neath.
In the common area garbage chute room I found the same.

When you find this stuff (yeah yeah test it) do you report it and what do you recommend ?as I see two thoughts.

One is to leave it be

Two is that if you leave it be it is pulling particulates into the air every time you vacuum.

What say you ?

Walk out basement, finished, radiant heat in floor (not in service at time of inspection). Moisture meter showed less than 3% moisture (most <2%) on drywall. carpet not wet, stained nor musty odors. I figured these guys need the mositure, why did they come into the house?

House has been vacant for 6 months or so - client says he didn't see any of them in July when he first looked at the place.

Any ideas?

ceiling stains

These stains are on the living room ceiling directly below the master bathroom. The tub was filled with water and drained, the sinks were run for 20 minutes, the stall shower was run for 20 minutes, and the toilet was flushed 5 times. After all of that the stains were found to be dry - no other indication of leaks.

Do you:

1) just mention dry stains on the ceiling and report your inspection method.
2) Call for more testing, as there are no signs of repairs.
3) As for a seller written disclosure.
4) State that there is no guarantee against future leaks due to no visible repairs.

My feeling is that the tub is not being used and may be the culprit. Filling it up once may not be enough to detect any stains. How would you guys write this up.

White substance in the attic

This white substance on the attic sheathing appears to be mold. It looks like they just cut new roof vents in the attic. The bath fan also vents into the attic. Would you recommend mold testing?

Dryer & Bath Exhaust Together

Townhome with Harry Homeowner basement renovations. Original builder installed dryer exhaust runs from front wall to the rear wall, exceeding the 25' rule, actually 20' with the 90 degree elbow. Mr. Homeowner then decided to connect the bathroom exhaust to the dryer exhaust, imagine the moisture will clog the dryer lint, adding to the existing venting problem. :)

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I need some refreshers. A-frame attic with knee wall storage. Some of the 2x6 trusses are discolored and dark where they meet the deck. No water intrusion that I can tell and does not look like mold as it is part of the wood. Ventilation is minimal. Check out the photos. I;m having difficulties in linking the photos. I'll work on that.

Thanks, todd
