Mildew is a thin, usually black, sometimes white, growth produced on many surfaces by molds. Molds that cause mildew flourish wherever it is damp, warm, poorly lighted, an/or where air is not circulated - cellars, crawl spaces, closets; on draperies and rugs in basements, on shower curtains, and on damp clothes rolled up for ironing. http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/bytopic/disasters/primer/npsmold.html Mold is often used interchangeably with the word mildew. They are the generic terms that describe a variety of microorganisms, including fungi, algae, rusts, yeasts, and bacteria, that are agents of deterioration for museum objects. http://muextension.missouri.edu/xplor/hesguide/housing/gh5928.htm Mildew can be found on many different surfaces. It is a thin, black, or sometimes white, growth produced by mold. Molds are simple plants belonging to the group known as fungi. Though molds are always present in the air, those that cause mildew need moisture and certain temperatures to grow. They commonly develop in humid summer weather, especially in closed houses. These molds grow on anything from which they can get enough food. In homes they develop most often on cotton, linen, rayon, silk, wool, leather, wood and paper. Many synthetic fibers resist mildew. Molds that cause mildew flourish wherever it is damp, warm, poorly lighted and/or where air is not circulated -- in cellars, crawl spaces of houses without basements and clothing closets. It can also be found on draperies and rugs in basement recreation rooms, on shower curtains and on damp clothes rolled up for ironing. These molds are also likely to grow in a new house because of moisture in the building materials. http://dbs.extension.iastate.edu/answers/projects/answerline/questions/answer338.html Mildew is a living organism that grows with warmth, humidity, and nutrients. It is the common name for various molds, simple plants that are classed as fungi. It tends to have a fuzzy appearance and may be white, rust, green, or black, the latter being more common. As mildew grows it "eats" the fiber, causing permanent fiber damage and weakening. Bleaching to remove mildew further weakens fabrics. http://healthandenergy.com/mold.htm Mildew is mold growing on fabric This is the one quoted by Michael in post #22. http://www.servpro.com/services/mold/faq.htm I find it interesting that this was the sixth return in a Google search. Why skip the first five and the following one, which is the best one of all for us as home inspectors? It would make a helpful link to provide to your Clients: http://inin.essortment.com/bathroommildew_rgut.htm So it seems pretty obvious that there is—ooooooops, I mean was—mildew in my bathroom prior to the BCS Championship Bowl. (Anobiids, Anobiidae, broadly wood boring beetles, and even more broadly wood destroying organisms are words considered more appropriate) So I am not at all surprised about the lack of mildew in your bathroom.....if it is called mold it can be turned into gold. |
