Default Invested Investment vs non-Invested Investment

Are invested investments better than non-invested investments and or under-invested investments?

Could you define each one?
If I have "investments", my understanding is they ARE invested, i.e. expected to be generating revenue.
A "non-invested" entity, is just that, it doesn't have the same expectations, no?
