I totally agree with you, Joe. My sentiments exactly. I've been off a roof, 5 times, over a 40 yr period. I was young then, and I broke a lot of bones. Most of the falls were my fault, due to supermanism, or cutting corners, but the fact is I couldn't handle another at 61 yrs old. No inspection is worth my life! The issues of liability for damages is also a " nay " factor.

STAY OFF THE ROOF!!!!!!

It's not for the 2.5 extra feet. It's for the ability to step straight onto the roof. I've never seen one of those before. I think it's a great invention, but I still won't walk anymore roofs................period!!!!!!!!!!

Worth repeating.
I would agree with that if it were correct.

Many times I have found problems on the roof that could not be seen from the ground, with binocs, or from an ladder at the eaves and the issue was not in an accessible portion of the attic, and it only takes once to get in trouble.

The bottom line to all of this is, if you think it puts undue liability on you that you may damage the roof, or you are afraid to walk them, or you simply just don't think it should be done, don't do it. The goal is to get it right, the how to do it is up to the individual inspector, and as long as we get it right, we don't get in trouble.

Blaine, I truly believe that I can find out more about a roof from a good, thorough inspection in the attic than I can from being on the roof. Yes, there are defects you will find on the roof that you can't see from the attic, but bottom line with a roof is, does it leak? I can tell that better from the attic than the surface of the roof. Very hard to spot leaks from the roof surface. I agree, nothing wrong with walking the roof if you want to...if I see something from the ladder that needs further investigation, I will get on the roof and investigate it further. If I don't see something, I don't.

Every roof that can be safely walked on. Summer, and hot weather is no excuse not to walk a roof, thats why they make gloves, and I have seen inspectors in the summer time show up wearing shorts, I guess thats why they don't walk on hot roofs.
Winter is another story, and safety is the main concern.
I personally walk on or attempt to walk on all levels of the roof.

I personally feel your not doing your customer justice if you don't walk their roof in the event you can in a safe manner. Now if a safety issue arises then by all means pull out the binocs however if your able walk them.

I tell EVERY client, if I don't find ONE thing wrong with the roof, the inspection is FREE.

I agree with you 100% Harold. It's funny how a few years takes the bounce out of your bones !!

I can't tell you how many times I've seen the boot prints in the shingles made by some over zealous inspector who just had to walk the roof on a hot summer day!

View from the edge.

View with binoculars.

Walk only when absolutely safe and needed.
