We all know and appreciate the "ultimate sacrifice" that circumstances can dictate to an American soldier...but there are many smaller sacrifices that go hardly noticed.

In four years of marriage, my son and his wife have been able to spend one and one-half of those years together. His first chance to be home with his daughter on her birthday will be her fourth birthday, possibly. She just turned two in February while in Italy with her mom while her dad was in Germany preparing, with his unit, to deploy.

When someone, somewhere, as an act of kindness offers a refreshment to my son at the airport as he waits to connect with his next flight...the school kids who write and send cards to him while he is in a war zone...or just the kind people who stop and say "thank you" to him as he carries his duffle bag through an airport...they have touched my heart, too.

This is something that I have done for several years, now, as a way that I can also say "thanks" to the people who now carry the flag for me.
Good for him, you must be very proud. I can't imagine having a child in combat, nor do I want one. It is a great sacrifice to the whole family unit and for that I applaude him.

I wish there were no wars, you think we would learn from our mistakes.

Maybe one day, although I am sure I won't live to see it.

James, I wish your son all the luck in the world and a safe return.

Mine came back last year from Iraq as a Combat Medic and showed showed his Mother the Bronze Medal of Honor. I did not want to know what he had to do to achieve that. I was just glad to see him home.
I also wish that your son will come back to you and his family.

Marcel

Hello Marcel,
During the battle of Dak To, one of my brothers served as a Combat Medic in Viet Nam. He also earned the Bronze Star with "V" device for Valor.

I am sure that is what you were referring to.

As an American you should be proud of your son. As a father I am sure that you were bursting with pride as I would be.
May God watch over your son now and forever.

Jim,
I really don't know what to say. I send my heart felt best wishes to you, your son and his family, and indeed to all of our American servicemen and women who are in harm's way.

I ask that God bless your son now and every day until as an old man he stands before his creator.
I pray that your son returns safely and unharmed.

Please give him my warmest regards.
