Default Wood Stove

Is it normal for the wood stove insert to vent directly into the fireplace. I have usually seen them more in closed and with flues. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

It is wrong. At the very least, there are parts missing. Call for an inspection.

Looks like a Craft stove. I grew up with one. The stove fits in just like it's shown...no special connection to the fireplace flue. However, there should be a sealed metal flange around the fireplace where it meets the stove. There should be no gaps for smoke to get out.
