Default Wood Stove Inspections-U.S. standards?

I had someone recently ask me to inspect their wood stove for insurance purposes. He said his insurance agent told him it was needed for his policy. I found WETT certified as a Canadian standard for wood burning appliances. Does a similar standard and/or training exist in the United States? This may be a good service to offer as many heat with wood here in the winter. Any guidance you may be able to offer is appreciated.

Hello Chris For the best advice you can give your customer please go read this article about wood burning appliance inspections for homebuyers on my site. Every single client I have given this information to has thanked me and agreed. It is a lot more important than making a few extra dollars.

As additional info the link Brian set out is a group very similar to the WETT group here in Canada, This is what they do

USE A NFI CERTIFIED SPECIALIST TO DESIGN AND INSTALL YOUR NEW HEARTH SYSTEM.

ASK YOUR NFI CERTIFIED SPECIALIST FOR HELP WITH IMPORTANT DECISIONS:
* Compliance with code regulations and manufactures' instructions
* Size, type, features of the hearth appliance
* Proper materials for heat protection of walls and floors
* Appropriate size, type, configuration, and height of venting system
* Selection of proper fuel
* Guidelines for operation and maintenance of the hearth system

Please read the article and you will understand why that service is not one you should be recommending to your clients.
