Up here in Canada we put our winter gloves in the Microwave. If they come out warm then the Microwave works eh! No really I still have NOT found any home buyers that buying a home with the microwave included so I never get to use my cool NACHI microwave tester. Too bad because it impresses the **** out of me. Speaking of which I got my cool NACHI I.D. badge yesturday that impressed me as well.

I use a microwave leak detector. That device tells me if the microwave has a leak and at the same time, whether the machine is functioning.

The primary issue is safety; more than its ability to increase the temperature of water. If I am detecting radiation leakage I guess it is also functioning.

I have found that the "built-in" units tend to have leaks more than the standalone units.

I disclaim microwave testing. Even if the water-in-the-plastic-cup-test confirms that a microwave is working it does not confirm containment of the microwaves. Anyway, here's the narrative that I use, and anyone is welcome to it:
I do not evaluate microwaves, because the power of their magnetron tubes diminishes over time, and the specific measurement of the microwaves and their containment within the unit requires specialized instruments, which is beyond the scope of my service.

Thanks Todd

I got the Tester a bit more than a week ago. Like I do with most anything, I tore it out of the package, read the caution information, and popped it into my Microwave, 11 seconds on high. I then picked up my Grandson and held him as we watched the really neat light show - but wait, ther's more: it sparked for a bit and then gave a slight 'pop,' then blew flames out the top with a trailer of foul odor smoke. Seems that it is only good for one used, is that right? When I returned to the instructions I found an additional warning to not put it in the center of the oven - which is just about where I put it.

I'll go back to the popcorn idea.

I put one in for 45 sec. on high and it put on quite the show......

I have found that 7 sec. or about one revolution of the tray is about enough.

I have one left, would you like to try again?

P.S Do not give them away at trade shows.. 5 complaints already....

has anyone tried the cell phone test in the micro. put your cell in the micro and call it if it rings the mw leaks, this is not a way to test if the mw heats up so don't turn it on. i wanted to try, but i don't have cell signal in my kitchen. so let me know if..

Tried it, but the hamster refuses to answer, seemed entranced by the light show given off from the Nachi MW checker.

I always bring popcorn to test the microwave. When I tell people the microwave can't even make popcorn, it gives them a perspective of how bad the microwave is.

BTW, in the summer time, I always bring 4 or 5 bottles of chilled water in a small cooler for my clients to drink with the popcorn. Everyone is happy and I get the inspection done without the clients following me around . Always do your marketing when you have the opportunity to.
