Thanks for the lecture, but I didn't need it.

John,

There is a difference between a lecture and an explanation.

You didn't seem to understand the greater point about th eimportance of planning and responded with the same type of answer I get from Nick about planning, so I explained.

Sorry, if I wasted your time.

Lots of thread drift here. Joe, you are right, if you fail to plan, youre planning to fail. But that has no place in the CMI discussion. CMI would be more than a marketing tool, it would be a badge of accomplishment.

When I was a cadet at SUNY Maritime, I sat for and passed an examination that took 4-1/2 days to take and required time spent at sea before I could sit for the exam. That got me a USCG 3rd Assistant Engineer's License. Before I could sit for a 2nd's license, 2 more years at sea (experience) was required.

The difference in pay was 20,000.00/yr. BUT, there were no 2nd's jobs available. Did I take the exam anyway? Yes, because I was even more qualified for the 3rd's jobs available. US Merchant services were declining in those days. I knew Chief Engineers sailing as 3rds.

One day, a Realtor asked me why I used a Tablet PC on my inspections. instead of explaining why I didn't use a checklist, I responded, "Because it keeps me from killing deals by being too nit-picky." I swear to God, my business jumped from being a part-time inspector to full time!

I have used the term Computer Managed Inspections CMI for four years since.

How about a royalty , Nick?
