Thomas Jefferson, who shaped much of the nation's architectural image, ranks among America's most important architects and the first American architect of international stature. Jefferson’s architectural image of the new United States has become so established in our view of ourselves, that it is difficult to imagine an American architecture – especially an American civic architecture – without him.
This lecture will draw on the body of Jefferson’s own architecture, as well as that of his workmen.

The purpose of this class is to impart the critical methodology and vocabulary necessary to understand and manipulate proportional systems in architectural design. It examines the numerous and often contradictory systems of proportion put forth through the ages from antiquity to contemporary times. Particular attention is given to the geometrical proportioning systems used in antiquity and found in the tradition of Gothic architecture, in contrast to the arithmetic systems of proportion used during the Renaissance. The intention is to give contemporary architects and designers a practical “working knowledge” of a subject that has been of central concern to architects working in many varied epochs.


Architectural Hardware and Mouldings

The seminar will focus on two aspects of interior design: hardware and mouldings. The first section will discuss the origins and history of mouldings in the United States, focusing on Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, and Arts & crafts styles. We’ll review traditional moulding profiles to better understand proportion and scale for different period styles and show how those profiles can be applied in design today. The session will look at the hierarchy of moulding for different room types. The second part will focus on hardware, covering the history of the subject in the United States as well as period appropriate hardware for historical house styles.


Priced at $45.00 per course or $120.00 for three, includes registration fees, course materials and certificate of completion. Each course will serve as a foundation for ICA & CA's other courses and will qualify for AIA/CES credits.
