....In 1901 We lived to average Males Females
..................................47........46.3.. ....48.3
2001 we live to average..77........74.8......80.1.

I am 71 and averages say I should live another 13 years and 8 months .
So we must be doing some thing right to last about 30 years longer then our ancestors .
North America is a great place to live even with its faults still better then most other places

The yearly taxes on my property and home are more than my yearly mortgage payments.

Is your home almost paid down John?

Your statement blew my mind for a minute, but then I thought it over. Do you have a low mortgage payment? At the end of your mortgage?

There has to be a reason.

In socialist countries, it is called "re-distribution of wealth". In capitalist countries, it is called "taxes".

It is amusing how it works and people in Washington D.C. must be tripping on it every day. On this thread, citizens lament their loss in taxes. On another thread, the Foundation for Safer Housing lauds their award of grant money. One man's ceiling is another man's floor.

Very astute of you. Yes the Mortgage payments are near completion. However our taxes have been higher than our mortgage for quite a few years.

In NY they tax anything and everything. Sometimes its fun to watch. Our gas is still running around 2.59 a gallon here while the national average is 2.29. Why - Because of all the extra taxes of course. So what do we do. Well in my case I drive an extra 2 miles to the nearest station in Pennsylvania.

I did a beach condo last month. The place was about 1100 sq. ft. and did have a nice view. The taxes will go up when the new owner takes possession to the "adjusted rate". The condo sold previously in 2000, so there will be about a 40% adjustment upward in the valuation of the home.

The taxes last year were almost 30K.

Wendy,

My mother lives in a house that was just appraised for $187,000.00. Her property taxes on that same house is almost $14,000.00 a year Homestead. If she did not live there it would be even higher. The city made an Oops and changed it to Non-Homestead (she had it corrected) and her tax bill came in with it being over $20,000.00 for the year.

Insane, she is now looking to move across the street to the township where the taxes on the identical house with the addition of central air, in-ground pool & over an acre of land would be around $6,000.00 a year. (My mothers lot is under 1/4 or an acre.)

Joseph, that makes sense. Jason's mom's taxes are just outrageous! Talk about time for the Boston Tea Party again!

My mothers house is the last house in the city before you enter the township. The city will not let her secede to become part of the township because they wouldn't have enough property to maintain their city status. Her house was the builders model for the subdivision built behind her house. They are all in the township... except three of them that border her lot. (They each pay $25.00 a year for about 10' of city land.) Her house & the subdivision were all built in the mid 60's. About 5 years ago the city became a HISTARICAL DISTRICT (as my mom says).

Just 1 mile outside the city limits, tucked away off the major roads are hundreds of 1 million to 11 million dollar homes in subdivisions with 1/2 acre lots. This is in Michigan, where most of the housing is from $180,000 to $400,000. (Northern Oakland County... The last I checked, the third wealthiest county in the USA.)

On the bright side my mother does bump into a lot of famous people regularly. She just doesn't know it until later when someone tells her "Do you know who that was you were talking to!" and of course she says "No, but they were nice." She then kicks herself because she had turned down a dinner invitation with them, because she didn't think they look like they can afford it based on what they are wearing.
