Maybe they can add a sound cannon - one that shoots out low freq waves - makes the pirates crap their pants on the way in - tough to hijack a ship with a pants full.

Since the laser power is adjustable it would be easy to accidently turn the knob from "scare the pirate" to "vaporize the pirate" when the boat hits a slight swell in the ocean. oops, darn wave, where did that pirate boat go? What pirate boat?
