Jeff;

You have to admit that things have been a lot better for NACHI inspectors around here lately. Don't you think?

Hello all! I can re-confirm what Nick is saying here. I had the opportunity yesterday (5/27/06 9:00AM) to attend the marketing seminar in Syracuse, NY where Nick was the speaker. I can honestly say that the name "ASHI" did come up during Nick's presentation and that he in my opinion, did not do any bashing of ASHI and only stated facts.
Nick, if you read this post. It was a pleasure meeting you and thank's again for the great presentation!

James, that was sticky because we had an ASHI guy in the front row asking ASHI questions, the main one being would NACHI consider waiving entrance requirements for full ASHI members. My answer, and I confirmed with John Bowman in the back row of the room, was "No."

NACHI's entrance requirements are simply too robust: http://www.nachi.org/membership.htm in comparison.

And no, I did not get any kind of legal notice requiring ease up on the ASHI entrance requirement issue, and no I did not buy ASHI. Michael Casey of ITA asked me to back off, I like the guy, I granted his wish. He is getting his employees/instructors to do the same with regard to NACHI. ITA is kind of where ASHI and NACHI overlap on common ground which I hope expands. I hope to hold NACHI chapter meetings at ITA's schools (we already do in Texas). ITA is a very good school and NACHI & ITA make for a perfect fit.

Anyway... face it... our industry is down to two little indians, might as well stop shooting arrows at each other.

Peace.

Interesting point.

Many ASHI guys I run into slam NACHI because they say that our membership requirements are a joke. If so, then why are they concerned with meeting those requirements?

Life is such a quandry, is it not?

In any case, I believe that this is a positive step. Both associations could do a lot of good for their memberships if we could stop bickering between ourselves and work together to uplift this industry and fight the real enemy, the French.

ITA and Kaplan were costing NACHI millions of dollars. They had state licensed schools operating the largest home inspection schools system in the U.S. with all ASHI big wigs as professors, using their positions at those schools to slander NACHI over and over to those very people (aspiring inspectors) who would have surely considered joining NACHI otherwise. ITA and Kaplan were killing us because their employees not only had our audience (inspectors) but held a certain position (professors) and were willing to lie about NACHI over and over and over. Some of the stories they were telling about NACHI were so over the top as to make the audience think I had horns on my head. I never really cared much about the average ASHI member who was bashing NACHI as it caused us little damage. It was all the prominent ASHI presidents, standing in front of inspectors, as ITA professors, at licensed schools, slandering NACHI over and over that was causing all the real financial damage to NACHI. Combine the 3 (audience, position, willingness to lie) and they were able cost NACHI a fortune, and did, and to some extent continue to. We either had to sue them to recover the millions and get them to stop which meant trying to take on Kaplan (a 1 billion dollar company) or make peace. So I flew to San Diego and tried to make peace with them (a long shot at the time). Much to my surprise I found a really decent man, Michael Casey. I predict he will eventually bring the entire industry together, he certainly has the sensitivity and brains to do so. ITA can be really proud of him. Anyway, NACHI can fill a classroom with inspectors, ITA runs inspection schools. Win-win.

Peace.

We had a booth at the 2004 ITA Vegas Convention (arguably the largest inspection show in the industry at the time). In 2005 ITA/Kaplan hired the sitting ASHI President (S.G.) who dis-invited NACHI to the 2005 ITA Vegas Convention (we didn't go). Then he threatened the vendors at NACHI's 2005 Convention telling them that if they were vendors at NACHI's Convention, they would not be permitted to ITA's in Vegas. Of course the vendors all called me up about it and I had to do what I had to do to keep the show together. That one ITA employee cost NACHI a small fortune. It wasn't so much that he was ASHI as it was that he had the position at ITA and the power (or at least he claimed to have the power) to hurt vendors that attended the NACHI Convention. Who really gets hurt though? Attendees at both shows. I hope that era is over now. A lot of blood got spilled for nothing. The war had to end for the good of all.

We'll be at the 2006 ITA Vegas Convention big time in September. I recommend that everyone come. It will help your business and be fun too. I hope to see you all there.

Peace.

Nick,

Knowing that Mike Casey is big on ASHI too makes it easy to see why he asked you to cool it a little with the ASHI comments. How has ASHI responded to your peace treaty?
