Every now and then I read a report in the paper or hear something on the news about someone who responded to these...and lost $100's or $1000's from their bank accounts.

I hear of it too. There are just some people in this world too stupid to breath. Local woman made the national news a few years ago...dumbest criminals or something like that. She called the police to report a "crime". Apparently a couple of nefarious individuals sold her some fake dope so she wanted the cops to go bust them. After the cops stopped laughing they arrested her.
