Seemed to go well, but I am by no means objective.
About 55 Illinois inspectors, some from as far away as 300 miles. 6 hours state approved CE credits. Here are some pictures Hope this works the last picture is Russ Myers, Chicago Chapter President and NACHI Eductaion Committee Chairman (Left), Ken Demski, Chicago Chapter Education Coordinator, Joe Tedesco, Nationally known Electrical Educator and, finally, little ol' (comparted to Joe) me. Good turn out. Even had about 4 or 5 non-NACHI members. Had some minor glitches with spelling and grammar, but everyone had a good time. Harvey;
When you come up, maybe you would like to come to our congregation. It's like a 50 / 50 mix of Hasidic Jews and Pentecostals. No..., Really. Will, in reality you must be a foot taller than Joe. Are you on your knees in that PIC or what?

Thanks for that comment Will, I didn't want to stir up anything, and with the fire marshal in the class, decided that I would submit this image that was near my seat so that someone could remove the broken ends from the receptacle on the upper left.
I can still spot a hazard from a distance, I did not try to use that receptacle but from the looks of it someone tried to plug in a different cord cap? Last edited by jtedesco1; 6/15/06 at 1:36 AM.. |

Joe can sniff out an electrical defect, or just an interesting detail, from iles away. It was very settling to have him there, both to contribute and to back up my sorry butt.
Thanks, Joe. Will:
I was aware of the SOP in your area and I hope that my answers on the test were correct, but some of the group seemed to be with different opinions about the actual duties of the Illinois HI. I remember something about not having to check polarity? Am I correct? I also remember hearing lots of discussion about the need for, or not requiring the apartment or condo main in the apartment panelboard and that they were in the electrical room. I think that this is a common practice. Russ mentioned the many times he too found the oversized lamps in the bathroom and in clothes closets as well. If you can post some of the pictures here we can ask for some input and try to come together with a NACHI interpretation? Is there such an animal? |

Common, agreed upon, NACHI interpretations?
Joe, you are a hopeless dreamer. Here is the link to the Illinois law Administrative Rules. Electrical is in section k). http://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/...00C02000R.html Having talked to two state legislators who helped write the law and the one NACHI guy who was on the committee, the aim was to write a law that would allow a group of people (state licensed home inspectors) to bridge a gap. Illinois is a very political state. Politics, it is said, is 'The art of the possible'. One one side, we have the consumer, the homeowner / buyer / seller. They have complaints about problems with their homes and the condition of their homes and about the problems that crop up during and after a Real Estate transaction. They, like most Americans, look to the government to protect them (usually, while they don't lift a finger to protect themselves!). On the other side (at least around here) we have developers, builders, Union tradesmen, non-Union tradesmen, politicians and code inspectors. These groups work together but do not always have the best intrests of the consumer in mind. To be fair, the consumer also wants a Rolls Royce job, but only wants to pay for a Yugo. So, the state creates state licensing for home inspectors. HIs in Illinois can only recommend, we cannot require. We are 'guard dogs with no teeth'. The consumer has the option to hire us, but they can know that there is, as with code, a minimum level of service, defined by the law, that they can expect of us. They also have the choice as to whether to listen to our advice or not. In doing so, the consumer must weight:
Needless to say, most HIs do check these things. But the state is, purposely, vauge. They leave it up to us (and lawyers!!!) to figure out the details. NACHI's SOP is much more demanding than the state's. Read the state's SOP. What do you think it requires? I only hope that NACHI's course will, at minimum, help the inspector understand this question and give him / her the necessary tools to meet whatever standards they determine from their own understanding. Many of the couse survey comments said that the course went way beyond the scope of what home inspectors have to do. Many also said that the course was full of 'meat and potatos', very filling and satisfying. To each their own.
