In a ruling that came about because of the Chicago handgun ban, the Supreme Court just ruled that the Constitution's "right to keep and bear arms" applies nationwide.

The important thing is that now lawsuits can proceed against many states and municipalities that have been arbitrary and capricious in not allowing people to possess firearms. Before today, there was uncertainty about whether states and municipalities could be sued at all under the 2nd Amendment. That uncertainty is now gone.

What is not clear yet is how strictly the 2nd Amendment right will be applied with respect to various infringements. For example, laws or ordinances against open carry (or any form of possession outside the home) will be challenged, but it will take a long time before there is a consensus among states that the 2nd Amendments protects this as a right.
