Just a way to avoid ties. Adding the .5 makes it so that the total score will either be less or more... but no chance of being equal.

BTW: One of the 8 possible scenarios in the first chance to win, will occur. There are no ties in the Super Bowl, they go to sudden death overtime until there is a winner.
