Here, In Illinois, I author and teach state licenesed CE courses through our local NACHI chapter. One thing that I have found is that many of the "older" CE providers made their classes REALLY easy. I try to m,ake my courses more advanced and challanging, more at the college level than at the GED level.

I believe that this is a good thing, as it raises the bar for inspectors who take my classes. They have to actually learn something. Some of the older inspectors who attend (not NACHI members) have complained about this. Many of them look forward to an easy class, just so they can get their state required CE credits.

One guy, a former HVAC "technician" flunked the test and complained, saying that he was licensed and knew more than I did. Maybe so, I told him, but then why didn't he pass the test. BTW: There is no training or testing required to become an HVAC contractor around here. Just pay the fee and prove insurance.

Turned out that this guy had never taken any formal HVAC training and had not worked on a furnace in many years. He did not even know the difference between a cat 1 and a cat 3.

So much for the "old pros". Sure, there are many great HIs that came from the trades, but that past experience is no indicator of being a hood inspector.

Hope this helps;
