report ownership

I noticed that the InterNACHI Home Inspection Agreement (2-5-11) has a line in section 3 that states, “Inspector shall be the sole owner of the report and all rights to it.” Can someone explain what that means? Doesn’t the client have rights to the report also?

Your client paid you for the information but doesn’t have the right (nor does his/her agent) to re-sell it. It happens so rarely that I wouldn’t worry about it.

Exactly…

Actually I did have a client recently who wanted to sell the report to another potential buyer. After we talked about it, he decided not to do that. But it does raise the question about client’s rights to the report.
