They store it vertically in racks so they can pull it from stock easier without having to shift pallets for rotation. Vertical storage allows more expansion and the longer it is in the rack the thicker it becomes. If you order a lot at once you will get varying thickness due to varying length of storage time.

Interesting. I noticed Hardie is now a light colored yellow and certainteed is grey in color. The bigger question that everyone at the lumber yard as well as myself has is, Why is 4/4 actually 3/4" and 5/4 is 1"???

There is a standard lumber size known as 5/4 that is an actual 1" thick. This size is often used for deck surface boards.

They are matching regular lumber which is 5/4 before planning.
