I saw a new ice melt product this year; a company made them into hockey puck shapes. Just toss them up on the roof, let them burn through. I think they lasted about 1 week in the stores!
Other option would be roof rake the first couple feet of your roof. Keeps the snow off, lets things move down a little easier. It has been a bad year for ice dams, even my hip roof had a couple small dams just from the amount of snow we've had. Root River Inspections

You can fill a nylon stocking with ice melt, throw it across the dam, and it'll melt a channel through the dam that will allow runoff to run off the roof. -13 deg. F here tonight. Spring seems a long, long, long way off.
