I just caught up with this thread.
You don't know how many of these doors I have ordered for people in both new units and retrofit units. I would imagine that if one of these doors were to ever fail, the company would have some lawsuit on their hands. So much for fire rated pet doors!

So now that you know, do you try to alert your past clients of the error?

David -

In regards to your question, you've already had many people tell you no.

My question to you is .... Where did you go to home inspection school before entering this profession? Didn't they cover this with you?

I haven't inspected a home with one in place. I mentioned earlier that I special ordered them for people at the Home Depot. This was also upwards to 6 or 8 years ago.

If this has been discussed, I'm sorry. I've looked but did not find it. Now be gentle.......If there is NO water heater or furnace or any type of ignition source in the garage, is a fire rated door still required.?

Yes. Still required. A car's catalytic converter gets extremely hot. As does the exhaust on a lawnmower or weed wacker or the sparks from a grinder.

The door, as well as the threshold and the weatherstripping also keep fumes out of the home.

No- so long as you can't use it as a garage any more!

(garage conversion to living space)

Actually it has nothing to do with the water heater and heater as both of thoes appliances can be inside the house, right?
