Default Hardboard Installation Practice on Attic Gables?
Is it common to find horizontal hardboard or composite exterior siding installed directly to the attic gable wall studs with no sheathing, tar paper, or anything else behind it?

Is this an approved manufacturers installation procedure for any or all of these materials?

Single wall construction - normal in Kansas City
