Let me get this straight......... you post a picture of a joist hanger that you state is undersize........ its pointed out to you that hangers are typically approved one size above their nominal value........ and now you are saying you didn't call it out but rather called out the flashing for which there is no picture showing what you actually were intending to call out..................................uh.........ok ay, if you say so.

Buck, the main problem is that it's nailed with roofing nails. You are allowed to use hangers one size under the dimension, so you can use 2x6 hangers with 2x8 material.

What you can't do is use fasteners that aren't designed for the purpose.

Hanger nails are designed with metal alloys that are strong in shear (like cutting something with tin snips) . Roofing nails are weak in shear but designed with big heads to keep shingles from pulling out (withdrawal). The size of the hangers isn't the issue, it's the type of fasteners used.

That's a defective installation.

Hi Jeff,

I'm trying to get this roofing course complete and it's really about all I focus on these days.

When I first got into the inspection business I took a correspondence course from (I won't say it). The tapes were was sooo boring that I had to fight to stay awake.

The series of about 12 tapes took so long to make that the narrator had a full head of hair in the first tape and by the end of the last tape... he was bald!

Anyway, I decided that if I ever had the chance to make educational videos, they were going to keep the viewer awake! I never thought that I'd have the opportunity, but now that I do... let's just say that most inspectors have never seen some of this stuff before.

Lots of location shooting, lots of dealing with experts, lots and lots of research. It's been almost all I've worked on for 14 months and we're finally about to start shooting. I had a full head of hair when this project started, but I'm afraid that by the time it's finished... I'll be bald!

Thanks Ken and anxious to see it.

Here is a deck attached to a deck. Nice tie in between decks
They also knocked out all the support post on old deck. Found architects drawing on site, it was not followed.

Kenton, I'm with you on the roofing nails, but they look like 10d hot dipped commons to me. But then again I'm not wearing my glasses either.

The heads are too big and thin, Chuck, and 10d hanger nails would have the number "10" visible on the head. The heads on 8d and 10d hanger nails are real thick. These are thin heads. These are roofing nails.
