An interesting aside to the starter strip question/equation.
I use Elks. They said no warranty if I didn't use their starter course. I put 2 pieces down and did a double take. They were about 6 1/2" wide (tall) That created a 1" headlap! I tossed them and cut tabs off of 3-tabs. Still do. I assume felt or I&W would take care of the leakage.

Steven, it looks like the offset is only about 4". Offset for 3-tab shingles is typically close to 6" which would make the patern less obvious.

Shingle installations actually have two separate warrantees. One is the manufacturer's warranty against problems resulting from manufacturing defects.
The second is the contractor's warranty which covers proper installation methods and workmanship.

The manufacturer's warranty is not negotiable and can't be changed by a contractor or salesman. It will not cover any problems caused by improper installation. The terms contractor's warranty may vary.

According to CertainTeed's tech manual, it's improper fastening.

Seems like it would be less likely to wick on steeper roofs, and that a longer shingle overhang might encourage runoff to overshoot the gutter on steeper roofs.
Actually it seems like more of a common sense situation than a "one overhang length fits all" situation.

According to the techies, neither extractive bleed-through or algae staining will damage the shingle.
They say that extractive bleeding will often fade after several months and manufacturers may ask for a 3-month period to see if it fades before replacing shingles.

Keep refreshing that those guys have a lot of good info and they might talk on a thread for months.

And they are not mfgrs. reps they are guys in the work place seeing the truth just like the people here sometimes you have to pick out the opinions you agree with and pursue the person further. I have had good conversations with a few that I highly respect their thoughts/opinions.

There are some that I do not have the same respect for.

Some kinds of things manufacturers don't like to discuss much. I've been unable to get time lapse photos showing how shingles change as they age.

"Racking" your shingles @ installation gets my vote!

Super common failure.. if you see a 3-5 year old roof and the patterned curling of shingles... they were "Racking" their shingles, meaning bending them to allow for an installation in a straight up and down manner, rather than in a standard typewriter / stair type install.
