They still exist! Now they are called x-perts!
I think the code thing is a nation wide problem!!
Not that I am that old but for a long time we were putting them on and the builders/homeowners said they didn't like the way they could see them above the gutters to stop!!! Now it seems the kickouts are one of the biggest issues for leak prevention!

Should be flashed with a flashing shingle..(bent into an "L"..under each shingle and up the wall) then the brick should be slotted to accept counter flashing to go over the piece going up the wall. And as already mentioned kick out flashing.

make any sense?

I agree with Mr Beaumont when he said "it looks the former". Looking at the pic, I'm seeing a full 3 inch brick at the window edge and a steel lintel above the window. I have not personally seen a veneer panel which did that. Nor have I seen a kick out soldier course like in the pic in a veneer panel. If this is correct, then I see this roof detail in my area quite a bit. There would be no way to cut the brick now to have a caulkable return for a kickout flashing.

A hammer and chisel! And a few new bricks then the next time the bricklayer would think twice!

If that is faux brick I wan't some. That looks to me like full brick veneer and even if not it should be flashed. The kick out is a given in any application along with gutters et al.

Larry the make the parts for faux stone and brick to make it look that good! By insitting the window it is very possible. But if it is a faux job with that kind of detail work and then leave out the kickout! Kinda silly!

Hopefully the moisture barrier is in better shape then this one!
