Size of Roofing Nail???

This was found at today's inspection, this is the size of roofing nail found used to nail down the shingles.

Fasteners for asphalt shingles shall be galvanized steel, stainless steel,

aluminum or copper roofing nails, minimum 12 gage [0.105 inch (2.67 mm)]
shank with a minimum 3/8 inch (9.5 mm.) diameter head, ASTM F 1667, of a
length to penetrate through the roofing materials and a minimum of 3/4 inch (19.1
mm) into the roof sheathing. Where the roof sheathing is less than 3/4 inch (19.1
mm) thick, the fasteners shall penetrate through the sheathing. Fasteners must
comply with ASTM F 1667. Staples are not permitted for shingle application
unless specifically noted in the manufacturer's installation instructions on the
shingle package. Use 4 nails for standard installations, 6 for steep slope or high

wind areas.

The nails never penetrated the sheathing.

I've seen the short nails used when shingling over an open eave where the bottom of the roof deck shows from below, on the exterior they seemed to hold fine, the rest of the roof was done with 1 1/2" nails.

It is in a rural area, new roof 4 years ago. The big storm Friday night did not help anything.

Were those tabs installed properly? It looks like the top layer was brought down on the bottom layer just barely enough to touch the glue strip.

And they probably set their nails too deep with the coil nailer. It looked like the wire was on the nail picture that Buck posted.

I think that was just residue from the fiberglass.
