Can anyone identify this insulation type? 1950's era. Thanks.

There was a shredded wood fiber insulation in the west back then. It was treated with lime, I believe.

from the pic it looks like deteriated mdf board, or detoriated wood shavings.

I agree with Brian, and see the wood fiber insulation fairly often out here. Usually it's fairly dense and quite dusty. There usually is no fire retardant value left if any was applied. To me the main downfall with this insulation compared to the newer type insulations, is that it ignites easily and burns very well.
