I didn't bother digging through files as I knew I would see another example within a few days, which I did this morning.

I agree that aesthetics are a factor, but if you ref. my posted pics, if the chimney was totally plumb, it would exit the roof about 12 inches lower, which would place the right edge approximately at the edge of the roof valley and also intersect the framing of the multi-plane surface and exterior wall. Talk about a nightmare to flash and seal and almost guaranteed to leak.

I love seeing the true stepped brickwork. It's an absolute masterpiece when done properly. I truely miss that workmanship. Good luck finding anyone nowadays that can even make proper repairs. Guys today generally have no pride in their work. It's all about the money. Oh, there's a few guys still around, but most of them are oldtimers, and just about past retirement. Damn pity.

I have had a HVAC friend tell me they were built that way so the pilot doesn't get blown out and it produces a better draft.
I have had another professional tell me, the only reason was to have the chimney exit at the ridge.

But the chimney in the attic (in post#1) was purposely installed with an integrated lean. I see these a lot in older homes. I have to go with the belief that the mason purposely brought the chimney away from the ridge line of the roof.

Just to make one last point for it is truly upsetting to me to here such dribble come from what I thought would be a place of learning.
In some ways it is.
Now to say you ignore-me?
Here 's what you have learned from someone you ignore.
> Now you know the term cobble and what it pertains to in building with brick or stone.
> Now you know what stepping is. When before you used the term integral lean.
As from what I see here, are some at the ready to judge than teach and demand instead of ask.
At one point in my life I was an alcoholic and addict.
Now 15 years and do not drink so Canadian club reference is absurd.
15 years clean and sober and to my father I say thanks to many prayers by me and others answered.

You guys are what is know as dry drunks for the ignorance and dither I have been seeing and reading in an effort to amuse yourselves at a mistake committed by me or others.
I say shame on you for I bet you know not about shame.
There are others here that are new and to afraid to even come and ask a question for this is what they are use to seeing.
My self I do not mind learning and as for being afraid (ha ha ha ha ha) I grew up in places that you would not survive in and be humbled very quickly. By men mr.jj not the big guy I told you to fear.
I fear no pecking order here and truly fell sorry for the ones missing out by your prejudice and slander.
I am self taught taught inmost parts of life for teachers where as you are (small minded)

So ignore me if you wish but by using reference to terminology I have mentioned ,it seems funny and a bit of a dither NO.
