I'll give you one. In an apartment building that was being renovated there was no outlet in the washroom, it was easier to install one under the light switch in the hallway by the door rather than run a line. The tssa (gov't electrical) inspector required it to be gfci even though it was technically on the other side of the wall. When asked he replied potential use of that outlet by people in the washroom could be deemed a safety hazard.

The same could be said for the above outlet by the bar.
Just because it was easier, doesn't make it right.

Would you call out a bathroom with no outlet?

I don't like calling this a "wet bar". IMO it's a half wall. Wet bar, to me, is sink with lots of delicious beverages available in close proximity.

See what I added to my previous post.

LOL
Thats true but the building owners were not about to spend that kind of money on 300+ units. And they were pissed that they had to spend some money on the GFCI's.

Maybe they should have had it inspected first.

Take a good look at the picture again and imagine how if that was your place that you may have a beer sign or small tv sitting right on that counter and facing the living space.

Remember to make the doddle do- doddle do sound , like in Waynes World flash backs as you do this.

Richard

This was my pre home inspection days 8 years ago. The electrician mentioned it to them but they were under the assumption they did not have to follow code since the building was built in the 60's pre code. They quickly found out any safety issues trumps any grandfathering.

I made the sound, and still, that 6-8 inch space at the top of the wall wouldn't fit a TV. If anything was to be on top of there (and plugged in), I'd probably use the closer outlet (on the kitchen side of the wall).

Bob, you can play the imagination game all day but it doesn't change the facts. Sorry.

Recommend away and be prepared to pay.

Joe,

Was there an outlet (or two) on the kitchen side of that wall?

Think party day all outlets are being used, hot plates, various blenders for different drinks, magic bullets for making those quick snacks, toaster oven for the h'orderves and all the outlets are full what to do with the fondue bowl. I know lets use the outlet on the other side of the wall. Uncle Charlie comes in drunk as usual and sticks his finger in the fondue pot gets burned and reaction knocks the pot over into the sink where you happen to be washing those martini glasses.

Too much thinking for me.

I don't drink martinis. (I don't wash the glasses of those that do, either.)

I do not tell the client that it is code and it needs to be done and the owner has no responsibility to do it. I advise them once they get the place to change it over for safeties sake.

Seriously Gerry, that involves to many if's for me.

We can't be responsible for someone using the stove/oven to heat their home, or using all the outlets in the kitchen, and then plugging one more thing into another outlet and using an extenison cord to reach.

No GFCI for me, there.

I didn't say you did.

Can I ask why the buyer would not take your recommendation and make it a condition of the sale?
