Meter Socket Repair

I work for a property management company.
After giving a homeowner a low estimate for a meter base replacement and never hearing back from him I wondered what was happening.
The old meter base had holes in it cause by oxidization from the oceanfront climate.
I dropped by there and found a repair had been made instead of a replacement.
Somebody used rivets and JB weld to patch it up with galvanized sheet metal…
This would not be permissible by the NEC would it?

I mean if it is; then it could be a useful approach in some cases.
In this case the service neutral has also degraded;so the owner will probably learn something the hard way.

I agree with this part, so the owner will probably learn something the hard way.

The meter socket should have been replaced as you suggested. There is no provision in the NEC code for altering or modifying a UL listed enclosure. With that cob job he will not collect any insurance if it causes a fire or accident.

“There is no provision in the NEC code for altering or modifying a UL listed enclosure.”

Thank you,
That was my interpretation as well.
