Default Multi-Branch circuits

I have been repeatedly finding white wires attched to multi-branch circuits. typically they are on 240 volt circuits like this one. Is there any condition where this is allowed?

It's absolutely fine.
It was not until recent code cycles that re-marking the white was required.

BTW - These are NOT multi-wire circuits. They are straight 240v circuits.

Good point.
If it were a multi-write circuit (one location i saw was not a 240 volt), is it still okay for an older cicuit?

I can't see any way of using a white as a hot in a multi-wire circuit. That would mean that a black or red were the neutral. If that were the case there are bigger problems at hand.
