Default Overhead service cable?

Hey guys, I inspected a 100 yr old house today with a 100 amp challenger panel. My question is from the pole it had only one wire coming in but it was spliced to the two wires(service cable) going to the panel on the exterior of the home. I can post a pic, but thought it sounded easy to picture. I have not ever seen this set up before. I realize 110 in on each wire, but with only one??

Thanks,
Chris
