I'm a tad bit surprised at the language written by this electrician, particularly since he's from a state as highly regulated as CA is. I'm ashamed that he's in the same profession as me. Shame on him. Bond lug on motor + copper piping = bond wire must be run.

Well let me just say this Marc....as a CE Provider for Electricians I have heard MANY things in my seminars from people....atleast I have them sitting and learning for at least 3 hours about what is right and what is wrong.

Having a title does not make an Electrician...it is the ongoing education that makes the electrician and sad to say I don't do CE Classes for California...lol...or I probably would make a fortune.

No, if there was the metal pipe and you suggested bonding for safety, and he came out and charged the customer but did not bond the pipe, you and Paul are right. That invoice should not be paid as the requested work was not completed.

My apologies to you and Paul, as I wasn't paying attention.

Ok......this will explain it as about as clear as anyone can get. Someone sent a copy to California please.

All metal piping systems and all grounded metal parts in contact with the circulating
water shall be bonded together using a copper bonding jumper, insulated, covered, or
bare, not smaller than 8 AWG solid.
The bonding requirement for hydromassage bathtubs requires interconnection between
metal piping systems and metal parts associated with the water recirculation system
only at the hydromassage bathtub location. As is the case with swimming pool
bonding, this section does not require the installation of a bonding conductor from the
hydromassage bathtub pump motor to the service equipment or panelboard from which
the hydromassage bathtub branch circuit originates even if there is no metal piping or
metal parts in the vicinity of the hydromassage bathtub. The bonding required by
680.74 is intended to create a local equipotential plane, and the equipment grounding
conductor of the branch circuit supplying the hydromassage tub provides the path for
ground fault current.
