Default Carrier/First Energy device

The home had a Comfortmaker heating system and a Frigidaire cooling system.

What is the device for. First Energy not open now to ask. I opened it up and it has components similar to furnace.

It is it used with the thermostat. This was also Carrier. What does it do?
