Default Clearances for pellet stove

Are there any special clearances for a pellet stove? Are they the same or similar as a wood stove?

Anyone care to shed some light?

The MFG should have the clearances listed in the installation manual but I would think very similar to other wood burners

Clearances for all uncertified wood burners are the same but each certified stove has its own set of clearances as determined by testing at its highest firing rate. Pellet stove clearances to combustibles are usually a fair bit less than regular wood stoves Check in the manual or for a lable on the stove.

I sold & installed pellet stoves when I was operating my retail store in a previous life. Although the pellets typically are a wood product (but sometimes corn) pellet stoves are not quite the same animal as a conventional wood stove. They normally require less clearance than a conventional wood stove. 1" on the rear and 6" on the sides is typical, but different models and different manufacturers may have variations. Except for the very front portions of the the top and sides, where they approach the front door, you can usually place your hand on the sides and top of the stove without burning it. They are engineered so that all of the heat is concentrated at the front. And overall, they usually produce a less intense heat than a typical wood stove. The heat is more moderate and constant.

Of course, as the others have said above, check with the manufacturer's installation manual for the particular model, or there may be a sticker on the rear of the stove.

If info isn't available, many manufacturers have manuals on their web sites. Here's some prominent manufacturers. http://www.quadrafire.com/index.asp . http://www.envirofire.biz/ . http://www.harmanstoves.com/ .

According to the International Residential Code, the code that applies to stoves is the manufacturer's printed recommendations. Those are, as was said, developed under testing, and listed in the Installation Manual for each product. There is no one set of clearances that applies generally to all stoves.
