Disconnect box

I understand that the exterior HVAC unit is required by code to have a disconnect box; my question is when was this code requirement effective. My code books go back to 1995.

A "means of disconnection" doesn't necessarily mean that it has to have its own box. If the service disconnect (main panel) is within sight, it can be used as the disconnect for the HVAC equipment.

Regardless of the requirement date, it should be noted if the equipment doesn't comply, but in any event, it's very unlikely that the installation predates any requirement.

I agree. It may or may not be a "code violation", but thats not what a home inspection is about. It's a safety concern if not installed within sight.
