Default disconnect for red package unit

I inspected a 1930 home with a packaged unit wired directly to the outside 200 amp main breaker panel. I know the elec. system needs upgrading. The breaker panel is within sight maybe 8 to 10 feet. Is this legal under old codes?

As long as it is wired to its own breaker rated for the unit and is within eye sight it is legal

The NEC considers within sight to be within 50 feet.

You researched when that was installed, and checked the local codes in effect at the time of the installation to veryify there wasn't a local requirement for a separate service disconnect adjacent to the unit ... WOW you are good ...

Couldn't resist Charley ... ... but I agree, no defect there ...
