We will have to wait until someone can produce a picture of this furnace. I did have one back awhile but my lovely holding program for camera lost them in the move.

David, was that gravity or induced draft? It may be that that upper cover buts to the air handler cover below it, sliding down a few inches to cover the burners (you can almost see a lip in the bottom of the upper cover) and then the cover leaves the upper portion harmlessly exposed. If that's the case, the cover being installed incorrectly may reduce draft (if gravity).
I recommend removing the upper and lower covers to inspect the combustion and air handler areas of these and horiz FAU's... you can wisely and quickly discern many service concerns in a snap! Plugged Evaps and other things are a quick way for you to receive unhappy phone calls (they're expensive to clean) |

Hi David
Jeff is absolutely correct I see this type of furnaces quite often. I usually see them on Mobile homes that were built between the mid 70’s to mid 80’s. Here’s a picture of one I came across a couple months ago, same unit. |

Yes that is the same design. Well done! Some have an open top and others don't but the one for trailers look slightly different.

Funny how "different" equipment looks different isn't it?
The air brake at the top of a furnace is not the same as the combustion burner compartment on the equipment in question. Not even talking about the same equipment. Scary! I thought just the guys with one or two posts were scary! 2109 posts later and we still can't call the kettle black, when it is! I'd like to be there when the client was writing a $75 check for a service call for covers that are on upside down! Furnace is an upflow ... Covers are correct as is. you would NOT vent the blower compartment. I see these 7-8 times a year.

Looks normal to me. Just an older furnace. I've seen unold thousands like this over my 42 years in HVAC. Swaping covers will not work, the covers won't fit and louvers will allow return air to create negative pressure in furmace area and draw air down the flue and the associated CO.
