Gas furnace vent insulation

Is it o.k. to make direct contact with fiberglass insulation? I have just discovered a big hole in my attic floor where the furnace vent exists the hall closet to the roof. Is it o.k. to enclose this area with some roofing flange and then insulate around the vent?
