gas shut off for room heater

Is a gas line shut off valve required for a vented room heater? The only one on this unit inside is the pilot light. The shut off valve for the gas line is outside.

Without digging thorugh the books, there will generally always be one installed at the appliance. Gas valves can and do leak.

I believe that most installation instructions indicate individual gas appliances should have a shutoff valve that’s immediately accessible, in the same room and within 6 ft. of the appliance.

6 feet is correct however the one at the pilot counts if I am not mistaken so it should be OK.
