Default Real Flame Gel Fireplace Or furniture?

Is this considered a "Real" fireplace? If so would it need to conform to local fireplace code? or is it considered a portable device?

Each can burns only 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

Safer than a gas operated vent less since it has a time limit.

Recommend a good source of air and CO detector nearby to be on the safe side, but seems OK from what I just read.

Reminds me of the Lazy Susan buffets.

Not any more so than usual,if they follow instructions.
It is like the mantel model on that site I assume.
