Okay,
Michael guessed the heat shield. This was from the same "Repair." There is an overall view and then a "close up" of the end. What is it? First one to guess gets an "Attaboy Greenie." I feel like I've seen what you're showing, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it is. Good Luck everyone... if I figure it out, I'll call back |

This picture was taken at my house. I needed to replace a part on my oil tank so I decided to have the entire unit serviced. This is a commonly used tool for a furnace's "annual maintenance." I figure with inspectors from all over the nation that any information that they did not have "yesterday" would be good to add to their data base. I am surprised that some of our "Northern Inspectors" have not chimed in with the correct answer. This tool has nothing to do with the duct work. The house is heated with "steam heated base-board heat." You are correct. When the soot builds up so much that the metal brush will not get rid of the built up carbon it has to be "sawn off". The correct name of the this tool is a "SOOT SAW". If you mean the "fins or nipples" inside of the heat exchange box then you are correct. If you mean the then metal "fins" on the baseboard heaters then....sorry no cigar. Thanks Frank!
Good info, I have always lived in houses that have forced hot air and have never seen a soot saw. |
