The water heater is vented into the OLD furnace flue. There was a new HE furnace installed this year. Should the water heater flue be downsized or is it acceptable the way it is now ???

Buck,
Hot water heaters and other fuel venting appliances must have vents sized according to code and per manufactures recommendations. Chimney venting may not be the right way to vent that water heater. Their is always a possibility that the fuel exhaust will spill back into the home. The draft like David mention could be affected.
