Just wondering how many would write this up as a repair item

Pic 2 pretty well seals the deal, just not the area where the return air is drawn from… I won’t say anymore 
The combustion air was being provided from the attic above the furnace within the closet not visible in the PIC
The home was a rancher not a apt or condo
Instead of recommending a specialist evaluation why woud you not just recommend combustion air for the furnace be provided if that was actually the problem
YES ,upper third of filter will be grabbing a whole lot of hot air, after that third is sealed, would need good weather stripping for rest where door touch’s frame after closing. might need extra vent in each bedroom. See it a lot down here in hallways.

Ok… I’d write it up as a safety hazard… the return air (neg pressure) in it’s current installation can draw byproducts of combustion.
Short of relocating return… I’d recommend to be sure to isolate as such.
Charley… how common is it to hard-pipe gas supply like that? I don’t see that much at all.
Most don’t take the time to hard pipe it all the way to easy to use flex outside the cabinet. Its fairly easy if one starts at the control valve and works back to the union.
BTW ya called it correct return air can not be installed in the manner shown in the PIC

No mention of proper filtering of the return air for health reasons? My recommendation would be an outside air supply fed into the upper area from the roof or side vent. Improper return air filter bypass. Recommend a proper fitted Merv 12 or higher filter into the return air to the furnace. This can be corrected by a Certified HVAC technician.

How do you know from the pic that outside air is not being fed you must of not read my statement to Keaton. I will repeat it again just for Kevin combustion air was being provided from the attic from above the furnace within the closet
