Default You just never know

I used my IR thermometer to check the temps at the A/C registers at this 9 year old home today. The one in the Dinette showed a very high temp while all the rest were around 55°. I went in the attic to see if I could see a kink in the flex duct or some other obstruction. Well, that area was pretty much inaccessible and I couldn't see the flex from my vantage point. So, I went back down and removed the register grill and, much to my surprise, there was no flex duct at all, just the roof decking showing about 12" above the opening. 122° air was dumping into the Dinette! Apparently the builder's installer couldn't get the flex to that register because of where it had been cut into the ceiling and he had planned to relocate it so that the flex would fit but he never did. The folks had unknowingly lived with it that way for 9 years!
