This isn't a deal where an inspector writes up a dryer vent as being "in need" of cleaning....then refers the client to "his wife's company" to do the job, is it?

From what our technicians in the field find is that dryer vents are not included, and many times are specifically excluded, from a Home Inspection Report.

Our company provides information to inspectors so that they may comfortably inspect, include and convey this information along with the report to their clients. This applies not only to home inspectors but other contractors, tradesmen and insurance adjusters when evaluating ventilation problems and excess moisture conditions.

Since you are including this as a "ventilation problem"...certainly you know that "ventilation" problems are a part of the inspector's standard of practice and that you are prohibited from collecting money to repair a defect that is uncovered during an inspection.

Are your inspectors also members of NACHI who are in violation of the Code of Ethics, or is it just you? By this I am asking...is this like the real estate salesman who refers her husband to do the home inspection to keep all the money "in the family"? Do we have a home inspector (and employees) reporting defective dryer venting and referring the repairs to his wife?

The service provided by Mr. Dryer Vent is the cleaning, repair and installation of dryer vents. We do not perform Home Inspections.

You mean like...if I started a company to fix roofs and put my wife in charge of it and, when I find a leaking roof, I recommend my wife's company to fix it? That way, she wouldn't be doing home inspections either. Kinda like that?

I guess what I am trying to say that a business that is in my wife's name is still a jointly held marital asset and that I would be in violation of the code of ethics if my jointly held marital asset was involved in the repair of something that is covered by the SOP in a home inspection that I conducted.

We have a real estate broker in Springfield who has her "own company" and her husband, a home inspector, who has his "own company", too. They work in tandem to close deals and bring the sales commission and the inspection fee into their treasure chest.

I would call this not at arms length .

Dictionary of Real Estate Terms
arm's length transaction
a transaction among parties, each of whom acts in his or her own best interest.

Examples: Transactions between the following parties would, in most cases, NOT be considered arm's length:

The inspector can do mold testing then remediate it.

Same for radon.

Same for termite inspections.

As to severability of ownership and marital assets, these are legal matters which may differ from state to state.

"Evaluating ventilation problems" is a part of the SOP, which is how Nanci described how her dryer vent service is being marketed in post #3.

One would be hard-pressed to make the jump between a dryer vent and a mechanical ventilation system. One would need to look at the intent of the inclusion, and what it means in a broader sense. The dryer includes a means to vent the heat and moisture, but we dont inspect dryers.

I dont think its included by inference.

I disagree.

A dryer venting into an attic space or crawlspace...clean or not...is a material defect, as defined by the SOP.

A dryer vent...clean or not....with 11 forty-five degree angle bends between the dryer and the opening to the outdoors that is 20 feet away is a material defect, as well. The scope of the inspection, as defined by the SOP, is to report observed material defects.

I think that it is a conflict of interest that casts doubt on the integrity of the report and the inspector when someone must ask "Is this a report of a defect....or a bid for a job?"
