Good evening all, I'd love to attach the digital image of my last inspection but have yet to figure out how to down size it so I can attach it here on the message board (help me if you know how to do this)
What I saw today was carpet thru out the basement, all the way under the waterheater and tuck nicely around forced air furnace, (why they did this? I don't know) My conscern was the carpet under the WH that was and standing flame pilot type. My partner didn't think it was much of a conscern, what do you guys think? I'll keep trying to send pics, somehow |

I use this software program to resize my photos. Works great and it's free.

Brian,
Check the manual that came with the WH it is supposed to stay with the installed unit, look it up online most available, or contact the manufacture. The AHJ has the final word. Or you could state your common sense opinion. Over-rule your partner. This is from one installation manual others are different and state specific distances from any combustibles: THE WATER HEATER IS CERTIFIED FOR INSTALLATION ON A COMBUSTIBLE FLOOR. HOWEVER WHEN THIS WATER HEATER IS INSTALLED OVER CARPETING, THE CARPETING MUST BE PROTECTED BY A METAL OR WOOD PANEL BENEATH THE WATER HEATER AND EXTENDING BEYOND THE FULL WIDTH AND DEPTH OF THE WATER HEATER BY AT LEAST THREE INCHES IN ANY DIRECTION. IF THE WATER HEATER IS INSTALLED IN A CARPETED ALCOVE OR CLOSET, THE ENTIRE FLOOR MUST BE COVERED BY THE PANEL. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN A FIRE HAZARD. Wood panel is just as stupid as installing over carpet.
